Haley was the quiet one of the family, perfectly happy playing by herself. She didn’t really communicate much. So, it was not surprising that she told no one what she had seen when her father died, supposedly a suicide. The red and white striped jump rope binding his hands never came up. Nor did she mention the “other” girl—Haley’s double—who had taken the jump rope away with her … skipping and singing that mournful song. The police concluded that it was suicide, but of course they didn’t know about the rope …

When Haley’s sister Cassie and her boyfriend were found strangled by a rope that was nowhere to be found, Haley was too fearful to speak up. You see … the other girl had shown up again … and seemed to be always close. Rachel also saw the apparition, and was concerned that something strange and evil was occurring. But what could she do?

Description

After ten years of marriage, Amanda and Alex had six children. Cassie, Monty, and Brooks having previous fathers, and Haley, Eric, and the baby Elizabeth being Alex’s biological children. Alex had adopted the three older kids and loved to play with them all. It was shocking and surprising when Alex apparently committed suicide. But, how could he have slashed his wrists in the bathtub and then slit his own throat? And why did the police not recognize that a rope that had been around his hands had been removed? When Cassie led the older kids to try to contact Alex through a séance, an apparition suddenly appeared. It looked exactly like Haley, and was constantly singing while jumping a rope—a red and white striped rope with red handles. Could it be a doppelganger?? Cassie, age 15, was a bit rebellious. Although forbidden by her mother, she wanted to date Shawn, and agreed to meet him at midnight in the woods. Cassie, and later Shawn, were strangled by a rope that was nowhere to be found. Each time someone died, the apparition appeared singing its mournful song. Rachel, who had agreed to live with the family and watch the kids in the mornings, also saw the apparition and became concerned that something strange and evil was occurring. Surely, it could not be just coincidence that the new deaths followed Alex’s death so closely. What could possibly be the motivation for these violent deaths? What had really happened to Alex in the bathtub?
