Seventh All Hallows’ Eve, 1st published 1974

It was supposed to be just a business deal, this marriage to Luther Christain. Love was not part of the equation.  The marriage proposal, received by letter from the silent man in the wheelchair, was unbelievablelike a fairy tale story. How could a struggling young, single mother deny her child the security that was offered? I would only need to tolerate the man for one month, with no romantic complications, and then I could divorce him and keep the financial security for my 11-year old daughter Jodie and her grandmother. In the end, I accepted for Jodie’s sake. But I soon learned that it would be a very long monththere was something quite evil in this mansion.  Jodie started seeing a little girl in blue—a ghost? The way she appeared and disappeared, she could not possibly be real. My dreams also troubled me as I struggled to understand who to trust—my polite but distant husband, or his engaging brother.  It had seemed to easy.  Jodie and I only had to survive a few more days until—the day after Seventh All Hallows’ Eve.

Description

Aleah Chalmers is constantly under stress in supporting eleven-year-old daughter Jodie and her grandmother Gram. Her work as a waitress in a “Country Club lounge” pays enough to barely make ends meet. So, when wealthy Luther Christain, an infrequent visitor at the lounge that is confined to a wheelchair, makes a proposal for marriage as a thirty-day business arrangement, Aleah overcomes her concerns, accepts, and moves the family into Luther’s enormous house. Luther is a perfect gentleman and begins to take on a role as Jodie’s father. As the days pass Aleah reflects on the strangeness of the secret arrangement, and begins to wonder about Luther’s motives. She also becomes aware that the thirty day period ends just after All Hallows’ Eve. A complication arises when Luther’s older brother Garth returns from one of his long absences, and Aleah and Garth begin to develop strong feelings toward one another. Meanwhile, Jodie begins to see another little girl about her age that mysteriously appears and entices her to follow to a destination in the woods. As All Hallows’ Eve approaches, there are strange occurrences and plenty of opportunity for Aleah to wonder who she can trust, and whether Jodie might be in some danger.
